Feryal Clark, nee Demirci, became the first woman born in Turkey to enter the U.K. parliament in the Dec. 12 general elections.
Labour MP Clark comes from a Kurdish-British family and was born in Turkey’s Malatya province.
Feryal Clark was elected with 51 per cent of the vote from Enfield North, which has a large Turkish and Kurdish immigrant population.
Clark had most recently served as the deputy mayor of London’s Hackney borough.
Another Kurdish-British candidate, İbrahim Doğuş, lost to his Conservative rival in West Bromwich.
The first Turkish-speaking British MP was elected in 1983 with the Conservative Party’s Richard Hikmet, whose father was from Turkey.
